John Terry was pleased to get some more time on the pitch before the defence of our league title starts on Saturday.
The skipper played his fourth game of the summer in yesterday’s Community Shield at Wembley. While he was disappointed the result didn’t go our way despite plenty of Chelsea dominance, Terry highlighted the game served a useful exercise for him and his team-mates.
‘It’s another 90 minutes under our belts and we look at the positives from it,’ he said.
‘These games are always a little bit slow with players finding their feet and fitness but it’s a good way of preparing for the season.
‘I hate losing, that is the mentality I was brought up on – it’s the same as the manager on a daily basis. That’s what he wants and demands from his players.
‘We’ve got experience and character and we’re looking good. We’ve got another game on Wednesday which will give a few more players a chance get some more minutes under their belt.
‘The most important thing now is the Swansea game and the three points.’
Earlier in the weekend and also at Wembley, Chelsea Ladies won the FA Women’s Cup final, beating Notts County Ladies 1-0. Manager Emma Hayes revealed afterwards Terry had called her on the morning of the game to wish her and her team luck, and with the trophy secured our captain had words of support and praise for his female counterparts.
‘I’m delighted for them,’ Terry said. ‘They’ve worked so hard after a huge disappointment last season.
‘I spoke to a few of the girls last year and they said without realising it then it would serve them well in the future. They go down in history as well as the first Ladies team to lift silverware for the football club.’
