Gary Cahill believes there are positives to be taken from Wembley ahead of the new campaign.
We were beaten 1-0 by Arsenal thanks to Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s first-half effort, the solitary goal enough to see the Blues beaten despite the majority of possession and territory, particularly after the interval.
Cahill felt we would have had a better result on another day.
‘Let’s be fair, the game’s been won on a piece of individual play to smash it in the top corner, but chance-wise we had the majority of the play,’ said the England defender.
‘I think in terms of possession we had the majority of the game but it’s the scoreline that matters and we’re disappointed with that. They started the game well, but in the second half it was the opposite of that we felt we were on top and they were sat back, and we had a lot of ball in their half. We did everything to score.’
The game represented an Arsenal debut for Chelsea legend Petr Cech, who moved across London over the summer. Cahill was asked how it felt to be facing a man who had spent so long behind him over the past few years.
‘He was part of the fixtures and fittings at Chelsea so it’s strange that he’s now left, but he’s a good guy, a fantastic goalkeeper, and last season we were blessed to have two of the best goalkeepers in the game,’ the 29-year-old said, before admitting the Gunners could challenge for our Barclays Premier League title this season.
‘They’ve started well, they’ve got a good squad and I think they’ll be one of many pushing at the top this season,’ he said. ‘I’m sure everyone has that belief at the start of the season. People talk and talk but the bottom line is when the season starts.
‘We’re confident, we have a good squad and still have another game on Wednesday [against Fiorentina], and more time to train before we start. We’ll be strong but it’s a tough league and everyone else will be strong as well.’
